Matchstick Kits – Everything Matchstick

Matchstick kits growing! With over 20 hours work and coming on nearly 1000 matches, my matchstick kit is growing slowly.

Matchstick kit making is having a very strange effect on me and I recommend it! Normally I am a man who is rushing around doing all the things I love so much. My brain is constantly in thought and exploration of the new and the chatter that goes on sometimes gets crazy.

But my matchstick kits seem to have brought me to an almost meditative state. As you know matchstick model making is not the fastest activity in the world. In fact it is darn well slow!

However this fact is having a calming effect on me and my brain allowing it to slow down and take a breath from my crazy day. I find that if I sit for an hour and begin construction of my matchstick production before I sleep, I find it easier to drift of to sleep later. My brain seems to have been quietened by this activity.

Have my matchstick kits found a possible cure for insomnia and similar high activity brain patterns? I don’t know but it is very interesting to me and at least I am getting to sleep easier now. Maybe if you have active brains you can try something similar!

Anyway as you can see from the pictures, I have now completed both sides of the floor, both sides of the left of the bus on part of the end door section and the seat bench. It’s really nice to see it growing slowly.

So far it has taken over 20 hours and nearly 1000 matches and I am amazed at these guys that take 6 years to build models.

It is giving me an idea to start a business though. What if I could get a production team going? Could I make models of famous buildings, landmarks and other items fast enough so that I could sell them and make some money? I will have to investigate that!

Day 5 tram

Tram3Tram4

For example (I am in The Philippines) could I make a matchstick model of a jeepney or tricycle? Or how about a carabao? What about making a model of the Island of Boracay (say 2 meters long) and selling advertising space to local businesses and donating it to the local tourist board to put in a high traffic area such as the island ticket office? Hmmmm that needs exploring! I am off to do some more model making now and will show you the results in an up coming episode in matchstick kits.

My New Matchstick Kits

My New Matchstick kits has finally arrived from Australia after the slow post took about 6 weeks for it to arrive.

My matchstick kit will hopefully grow over the coming weeks and I will document my journey in building this model steam tram.

Here is a picture of the matchstick kit box as it arrived.

First of all I opened the box and indeed there were a lot of matches and two small tubes of glue. There can hardly be enough glue! I guess I will have to buy more, but it is not expensive so no problem. I also went to the hardware show and bought some sandpaper and some acetate sheeting (I will show you how I use that in my matchstick kit another time. I also bought a knife, some nail cutters and a pair of tweezers.

Upon opening the box and pulling out the contents I discovered the whole plan of the steam tram in cardboard and although it was slightly damaged, it was not too bad. I can still use it.

The idea is that I lay the matches on the card to follow the shape and then turn it over and do the opposite side. However I have decided not to use the cardboard, which will make it a bit more challenging, but hopefully it will all be OK.

Over the next few days I will document my journey and show you my results. This is not a fast hobby so do not expect it to be completed by next week! It takes hours.

If you want to buy your own model then this book may help you as you come up with new designs.

Join me in my journey and see if you can make you own matchstick kits.
